LONG-TERM COOPERATION & BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP
As tradition goes, coffee and the Lamastus family are one and the same ever since 1918 when Robert Lamastus planted the first coffee tree at the now famed Elida Estate Coffee plantation. Almost a century has gone by and now 3 generations of the Lamastus Family are still working the farm, Thatcher, the grandfather, Wilford, the son and Wilford Jr.

Elida Estate located in Alto Quiel Boquete Panama, between 1,700m – 1,950 masl and has won top awards consistently in the SCAP BOP competitions, the first time in was 1st place in 2002 with Elida Catuai, the highest score ever in 2016 when Elida Geisha Washed won the BOP, again this year, we broke our own record,  the highest score ever given to any coffee in the 23 years of BOP history: 94.66 points for the Elida Geisha Washed. This 2018 BOP Elida Estate also won 1st place in the Geisha Natural category.

This was the first time ever in a BOP competition that the same farm wins both categories (washed and natural geisha), because of this the Lamastus Family won the Panama Cup or producer of the year. And again in this 2018 BOP Elida Geisha Natural reached the unbelievable world-record  price of $803 per pound paid by our friends and partners Black Gold Coffee of Taiwan. Three records broken this 2018 BOP by Elida: highest score ever, highest and the 2nd highest price ($661/lb) paid for a coffee. We invite you to indulge yourselves and try this one of kind coffee that, must certainly, will fulfill your highest expectations.

The ultra-high elevation Elida farm goes from 1,700m to 2,200m and part of it is located within the Volcan Baru National Park (VBNP) (www.lamastusfamilyestates.com) a protected ecological reserve and sanctuary for exotic plants, birds and mammals. The farm has a total of 65ha of which 30ha are planted with Catuai, Geisha and a bit of Typica, the rest is private forest reserve or is inside the VBNP. Coffee in this farm is only grown up to 1 950m and planted above 2,050m (not yet producing), in this area of Panamá coffee does no grow higher than this elevation. For several years we have offered the third-wave coffee roaster our super-specialty Elida coffees: Washed, Honey and Natural. Our small and micro-roasters from all over the world keep coming back for their micro-lots. They cup and pick their preferred lots based on cup attributes.

This 2018 season we did over 450 separate lots and are shipping each lot separated to our roasters all over the world. The coffees are produced under an unique world-condition for several reasons: first the farm is located at a very high elevation (one of the highest coffee farms in Panamá), it is grown in rich young volcanic soils, the temperatures are low, there is lots of fog and mist during the dry season, the coffee trees are surrounded by virgin-native cloudy rain forest, great number of beneficial micro-organisms, the nights get cold here thereby taking a tree from 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 years to start producing  (2 or 4  years longer to produce than average), these low temperatures also extend the ripening time 1 month longer (thereby the development of the sugars and attributes of the bean). All these unique growing conditions show in a distinguished cup. The Baru Volcano National Park is one of the highest volcanoes in Central America, with 14,000ha and 7 different climate zones depending on the elevation and we are part of it in both of our farm.
